The University of Washington

Located near downtown Seattle, the University of Washington is one of the leading public research universities in the nation. Since 1974, it has been the number one public university in America in receiving federal support for research and training. The UW's graduate programs are among the most highly rated in the nation.

The University was founded in 1861, making it the oldest public university on the west coast. Today, its Seattle campus spans 693 acres, with 80 species of trees and 218 buildings. Twenty-two of those 218 buildings house the top ranked UW libraries system, as well as the Henry Art Gallery for contemporary and modern art; the Burke Museum of Natural and Cultural History; the Gallagher Law Library, exhibiting Native American art; the Center for Advanced Research Technology in the Arts and Humanities; among others.

UW students also have ample opportunity to enjoy the performing arts. The UW Dance Program, School of Music and School of Drama regularly perform on campus, and the UW World Series bring the best in world dance, music, theatre and more to campus each year. Sports fans can enjoy UW athletics, which showcases some of the nation's finest NCAA division I sporting events.

The Emerald City

Seattle is known as the emerald city due to its lush landscapes and abundance of parks. The mild maritime climate ensures moderate temperatures and keeps the city green, allowing outdoor activities to be enjoyed year round. Seattle is a major port city and a hub of international trade and commerce. with the Olympic mountain range to the west and the Cascade mountain range to the east, Seattle is a place like no other.

Seattle's cultural institutions help make the city the gem it is. Major institutions in Seattle include the Seattle Art Museum, the Pacific Science Center, the Museum of History and Industry, the Wing Luke Asian Museum, the Nordic Heritage Museum, the Museum of Flight, the Woodland Park Zoo, and the Seattle Aquarium. In addition, there are more than 30 other historical and art museums in King County as well as a large number of commercial art galleries specializing in contemporary, ethnic and classical art.
